PAST CONTINIOUS TENSE

          1.      Definition

Past continuous tense menceritakan sebuah peristiwa atau tindakan yang sedang terjadi pada masa lampau. Umumnya, peristiwa yang 'sedang terjadi itu beriringan dengan peristiwa yang lain pula Seperti contoh ini, 'Rizal was cooking fried rice when I studied (Rizal sedang memasak nasi goreng ketika saya belajar).

2.      Pattern (Rumus):

·       (+) Subject + were/was+ verb ing+ object

·       (-)Subject+were/was + not + verb ing + object

·       (?) Were/was+ subject + verb ing + object

3.      Example:

·       (+) We were standing in front of class yesterday.

Kita sedang berdiri di depan kelas kemarin.

·       (-) We were not standing in front of class yesterday.

Kita tidak sedang berdiri di depan kelas kemarin.

·       (?) Were we standing in front of class yesterday?

Apakah kami sedang berdiri di depan kelas kemarin?

 

·       (+) She was singing a Javanesse song last week.

Dia (pr) telah sedang menyanyi lagu Jawa minggu kemarin.

·       (-) She was not singing a Javanesse song last week.

Dia (pr) tidak telah sedang menyanyi lagu Jawa minggu kemarin.

·       (?) Was she singing a Javanesse song last week?

Apakah dia (pr) telah sedang menyanyi lagu Jawa minggu kemarin?

4.      Function (Fungsi)

·       Keterangan waktu menjelaskan pada waktu lampau.

·       Menggunakan kata kerja berbentuk verb-ing (present participle) seperti going speaking, learning, dan sebagainya.

·       Menggunakan auxiliary verb berupa was/were

Adver of Time	Meaning	Sentrnce
As	Ketika/ saat	As they were playing football, I slept. Ketika mereka sedang bermain sepk bola, saya tertidur
While	Selagi/sementara	While jesica was reading, I went to school Sementara jesica  sedang membaca, saya pergi ke sekolah
When	Ketika	When I was fishing, he fell into the river. Ketika saya sedang memancing, dia ajatuh ke Sungai.
