SIMPLE PAST TENSE

DEFINITON

Simple Past Tense adalah bentuk waktu dalam bahasa Inggris yang digunakan untuk menyatakan kejadian atau tindakan yang telah selesai dan terjadi pada masa lampau. Tense ini umumnya ditandai dengan penggunaan verb 2 atau past form, serta dapat disertai keterangan waktu seperti yesterday, last week, two days ago, dan lainnya. Simple Past Tense digunakan untuk menceritakan pengalaman, peristiwa sejarah, kebiasaan di masa lalu, atau tindakan tunggal yang telah selesai pada waktu tertentu di masa lampau.

Contoh:    ·       I visited Bali last year.

→ Saya mengunjungi Bali tahun lalu.

B.    RUMUS

1.      Kalimat Positif (Affirmative)

Positive	Subject + Verb 2 + Object ·       he played badminton yesterday. ·       They went to school last Monday.
Negatif	Subject + did not (didn't) + Verb 1 + Object ·       I did not (didn’t) watch the movie. ·       He didn’t eat breakfast this morning.
Kalimat Tanya	Did + Subject + Verb 1 + Object ? ·       Did you visit your grandmother last week? ·       Did she buy the book?

Note: setelah did not, kata kerja harus kembali ke verb 1.

C.    JENIS KATA KERJA

1.      Regular Verb

Kata kerja yang bentuk lampau (V2) ditambahkan -ed.
Contoh:

·       play → played

·       watch → watched

·       clean → cleaned

2.     Irregular Verb

Kata kerja bentuk lampau tidak beraturan.
Contoh:

·       go → went

·       eat → ate

·       see → saw

D.    TIME SIGNAL

·       yesterday

·       last night

·       last week / last month / last year

·       two days ago / three years ago

·       in 2010 / in the past

·       this morning (jika sudah lewat waktunya)

E.    FUNGSI PENGGUNAAN

1.     Menyatakan kejadian yang selesai di masa lalu

·       He finished the homework last night.

2.     Menceritakan pengalaman di masa lalu

·       I visited Singapore in 2019.

3.     Menceritakan kejadian berurutan (story telling)

·       He woke up, took a shower, and went to school.

F.    Jawaban untuk kalimat tanya dapat menggunakan “yes” atau “no”:

• Did they go to Lombok last week?

Apakah mereka pergi ke Lombok minggu yang lalu?

Long answer:

• Yes, they went to Lombok last week.

Ya, mereka pergi ke Lombok minggu yang lalu.

• No, they didn’t go to Lombok last week.

Tidak, mereka tidak pergi ke Lombok minggu yang lalu.

Short answer:

• Yes, they did.

Ya.

• No, I didn’t
